Global Volunteers, a non-profit organization providing aid to communities around the world with the assistance of short-term vacationers, has launched International LGBT Volunteer Vacations, the first volunteer vacation program directed specifically at L.G.B.T. travelers.
Scheduled trips include helping with community development projects in Costa Rica, assisting childcare centers in Ecuador, and teaching English to at-risk students in Greece and Peru.
"The program is the same, but with free time I'll do things like set up chats with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender groups or activists, if they exist locally. But an equally important part is for volunteers to be openly out, to be able to say, 'this is who we are, and we've come to help,' " said Linda Schlapp, the director of LGBT Programs and Development, who said she "came out to myself" as a lesbian during her first Global Volunteers trip — as a traveler to Vietnam in 1995, before she worked with the organization.
"What a great way to show the world how human we are by simply volunteering," she said. "All activism is critical, and this is a low-key, peaceful way to help break down barriers."
Ms. Schlapp vets each destination to ensure visitors will be safe and welcomed.
"The community will know it's an L.G.B.T. team and agrees to it," she said. "We don't want to put volunteers in a situation where it's not safe or they don't feel comfortable."
Service program fees range from $995 to $3,795 (most are tax deductible) and include three meals a day, lodging in tourist-class accommodations and project materials. Schedule programs include Peru, Sept. 20 to 27; Ecuador, Nov. 22 to 29; and Costa Rica, April 18 to 25, 2015.
