For parents potentially worried about sending their kids away to camp, one newcomer is simultaneous vacations – in Jamaica.
New this summer, Jamaica Music Camp promises a week of musical programming and immersion in nature for kids ages 9 to 16 ($895 per camper).
Although musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments, musical training is not required, and all participants will receive vocal and ear training; take music appreciation, music theory and world music; and study some of several instruments taught including drums, piano, violin and others.
Limited to 15 campers, the weeklong itinerary, June 29 to July 5, generally features morning musical training taught by professional American and Jamaican musicians and educators, followed by afternoons exploring the 2,000-acre Good Hope Heritage Park and Citrus Farm where the camp takes place, about five miles inland from the north coast port of Falmouth.
While the kids are at camp, parents can take advantage of a discount from Jewel Paradise Cove Resort & Spa in Runaway Bay, about 35 miles away. The all-inclusive adults-only resort is offering double rooms from $125 per person, or single occupancy at $210 per night, including meals, drinks, scuba diving and more (email info@jamaicamusiccamp.com for details).
The arrangement should make it easier for parents to catch the concert finale performed by campers at week's end.
