T Magazine: Art Matters | A Decommissioned Catholic Church in Berlin is Reborn as a Hub of Creativity

To the 32-year-old German gallerist Johann König, art is religion. His father, Kasper, is one of the most respected curators in Europe; his mother, Ilke, and uncle, Walter, are leaders in art-book publishing and his older half-brother, Leo, is a noted Manhattan art dealer. And so, when several years ago, the architect Arno Brandlhuber approached König with the idea of leasing a decommissioned Catholic church called St. Agnes — a striking example of Brutalist architecture in the Berlin neighborhood of Kreuzberg — König signed a nearly century-long lease, despite the fact that the building (which included a nursery school, offices and a courtyard along with the church itself) was too big for his gallery alone.

Although he and Brandlhuber are still working on renovating the soaring church atrium to make it more practical for showing art, König has already brought on several creative companies to take over the extra spaces. The Praxes Center for Contemporary Art has a two-story space; Joerg Koch, the editor of the cutting-edge culture magazine 032c, lives in the former priest's apartment; and New York University's Berlin Art Studio will move into the former nursery school in the fall. Just a few months ago an Austrian gastronome, Peter Tukovits, opened a restaurant near the courtyard. Called Kirchenwirt und Greisslerei in St. Agnes, during the day it serves tasty homemade Austrian and German fare like knödel, schnitzel and sachertorte.

This Thursday, as part of Berlin's Gallery Weekend, König's space will debut an exhibition of the German conceptual artist Michael Sailstorfer's work. Here, a video offers a peek inside the building — and its rebirth as a destination for contemporary art and creativity.
