In Transit Blog: Cruise Line Will Return to Persian Gulf

Royal Caribbean International cruise line will return to the Persian Gulf next year, with 16 cruises planned between December 2015 and March 2016.

Seven-night voyages on the Splendour of the Seas will depart from its home port, Dubai, making calls in Muscat, the capital of Oman; Khasab at the tip of the Musandam peninsula; and Abu Dhabi.

The Splendour of the Seas is a "vision class" vessel, a slightly larger ship featuring a six-story shopping atrium and live entertainment hub, hosting everything from cooking demonstrations to aerial acrobats; an adults-only solarium with a retractable roof; and an Adventure Ocean activities program for kids.

Next winter will mark Royal Caribbean's fifth season in the Persian Gulf, though not consecutively. In September 2013, the company abbreviated its regular season of winter voyages and then pulled its ships from the region altogether, citing a decline in public interest.

But a new alliance called Cruise Arabia, made up of tourism officials from the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, Abu Dhabi's Tourism and Culture Authority and Oman's Ministry of Tourism, is helping to rekindle interest in the Gulf's cruising industry.

"This is a welcome step in continuing to promote the economic and touristic benefits of cruising, and I'm sure the season will be very successful," Helen Beck, a regional director for Royal Caribbean International, said in a press release.

Dubai cruises on the Splendour of the Seas start at $589 plus $76.78 taxes and fees, per guest, based on double occupancy.
