In Transit Blog: Competitive Birding in the Israeli Desert

On Tuesday, more than 100 competitors will descend into the Israeli desert, armed with binoculars, bamboo whistles and a desire for glory.

Israel is one of the most important bird migration spots in the world, with some 500 million birds from Africa, Europe and Asia taking a layover each year during their annual flights across the globe.

Eilat, a Red Sea resort city at Israel's southern tip, is a particularly popular spot for traveling birds, and it is the home of a popular bird festival.

This year the event will feature competitive birding, in which teams battle to lay eyes on the most species in a set period of time.

At midnight on Tuesday, more than 100 competitive birders will set off on the Champions of the Flyway, a 24-hour race to spot and log species along a triangular desert course sandwiched between the Jordanian and Egyptian borders.

The race features 24 teams, from Israel, Europe and the United States, as well as a joint Israeli-Palestinian team that calls itself the Palestinian Sunbirders.

So as not to give Israeli teams a perceived home-field advantage, the director of the Israel Ornithological Center, Dan Alon, said that the race was split into two tracks, one for foreigners and one for locals.

"Some of them are very competitive," he said of the teams. "They don't care about anything except seeing as many birds as possible."
