In Transit Blog: Big Airport Improvements on the Runway

Billion-dollar makeovers are planned for several major airports in the United States over the next few years, some already underway.

Almost all include aesthetic improvements (floor-to-ceiling glass walls seem to be popular) and better amenities for travelers, like upscale dining options, free Wi-Fi and more electrical outlets. Some plans go much further, with changes to infrastructure to improve passenger flow, baggage systems and sustainability.

The most welcome changes will likely come at La Guardia Airport in New York, a frequent target of critics. Its $3.6 billion renovation plan promises a new central terminal with open spaces, glass walls for natural light, more parking garages and better shopping.

The $826 million expansion plan at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport includes a sleek new terminal with sweeping metal curves, glass walls and an on-site hotel, all to be completed before the city's 300th anniversary in May 2018.

At Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, all four original terminals will be stripped to install energy-efficient air and plumbing systems, lay down terrazzo floors — and add glass walls. The changes are part of a seven-year, $2.3 billion program focused on the needs of the modern traveler, David MagaƱa, a spokesman for the airport, said. "People didn't use rolling bags then," he said of the era when the airport opened, in 1974.
