In Transit Blog: They Call It Parkipedia

Travelers who are passionate about national parks have an opportunity to contribute to Parkipedia, an online Wikipedia-like travel encyclopedia. The wiki aims to generate a crowd-sourced guide to 59 parks listed at National Parks Traveler, a website devoted to park news.

Kurt Repanshek, National Parks Traveler founder and editor in chief, said he hopes to harness the insights of his 1.5 million annual readers. "They are not all die-hard parkies, but if you think about what they know about a great hiking trail or where to see wildlife, that collective knowledge can produce a much more thorough guide than what exists now."

Introduced in October, Parkipedia is still in its infancy, with a fair amount of information on pages for Acadia, Glacier and Shenandoah National Parks, including details on camping, wildlife, dining and suggested side trips. But many parks, including the Grand Canyon and Mount Rainier, lack entries.

While Parkipedia is modeled on the free Wikipedia, users must buy a membership at $9.95 annually to gain access to it.
