In Transit Blog: The Latest Hotel Feature: A Smartphone

The new Viceroy New York has a novel amenity: a cellphone in every room.

Stocked in its 240 rooms, an iOcean smartphone will be programmed to operate the lights, curtains and thermostat, and act as a TV remote control. A preloaded app contains room service menus for ordering and a two-way communication feature that will allow users to directly text requests to the concierge.

Only guests of the hotel's top 20 suites will receive a SIM-card equipped phone, providing a local 212 phone number and allowing them to use the phone outside the hotel. Suite guests can also use the provided SIM card in their own unlocked phone to avoid long-distance charges for local calls.

The phones provide tech luster to a property designed to court buzz from its rooftop bar (scheduled to open this winter) to its Kingside restaurant run by the chef Marc Murphy in partnership with the bar-specialist Gerber Group. But it won't replace the standard in-room land line, retained, according to a representative, to reassure technophobes.

Rooms will start at $459.
