In Transit Blog: In Marrakesh, Lodging With a Starry History

The new seven-room boutique hotel in Marrakesh, Riad Star, offers a stylish and well-located base next to the Marrakesh Museum, as well as a little bit of stardust: it was the former home of entertainer Josephine Baker.

At the invitation of the Pashah of Marrakech, the American-born, France-based singer and dancer moved to this house in Morocco during World War II, where she continued to work on behalf of the French Resistance.

New owners Mike and Lucie Wood, who also operate three other small hotels in the area, knew nothing about the celebrity connection when they bought the property, which features a courtyard with a plunge pool and fountain, a rooftop terrace and a dining room with a fireplace.

"The neighbor who first told me about Josephine remembers her welcoming him and other youngsters into the riad," Mike Wood said in a statement. "It is for her human warmth and kindness, not her status as an international superstar, that Josephine is remembered."

Since then, the owners have collected memorabilia related to Ms. Baker including documents, photos and one elaborate former stage costume on display in the hotel. Inspired guests can play Jazz Age dress-up from a collection of vintage clothing –representing her heyday, but not actually owned by the star — including flapper dresses, dinner jackets, kimonos and ostrich feather headdresses.

Rooms start at £140, including breakfast.
