Basics
The Aloft Downtown gives Cleveland a major boost of bright, colorful and contemporary hotel design in an area — and a city — not known for style-centric accommodations. Part of the trendy and modestly priced Aloft chain run by Starwood Hotels and Resorts, the 150-room hotel is situated on the east bank of the Flats, a historic industrial neighborhood that is rebuilding itself as an entertainment and residential district after having lost its luster as a night-life hot spot in the 1980s and '90s. Connected to a new office tower, the waterfront hotel property, with views of Lake Erie, opened in June. It's part of the initial phase of a planned $500 million mixed-use development along the winding Cuyahoga River. A terrace off the third-floor lobby offers striking views of grand steel bridges and towering cranes that reflect the neighborhood's gritty manufacturing past.
Location
The hotel anchors new development in the Flats, but it's still a bit isolated from the rest of downtown. The bustling clubs and bars of the Warehouse District are about 15 minutes away by foot or a short cab ride. During Cleveland's blisteringly cold winters, that may prove to be a schlep. Steps from the hotel is a stop on the Waterfront Line of the city's rail system, which will take you to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Great Lakes Science Center and other attractions. To really get around you need a car; the hotel's friendly valet service is $20 a day. There is also nearby parking.
The Room
The beds face soaring windows, which in my case offered a beautifully composed Charles Sheeler-like view of the city's landmark 1930 skyscraper, Terminal Tower, and the Cleveland Memorial Shoreway's jutting steel and concrete. Along with two comfortable queen beds in our 332-square-foot room there were two wide desks that perfectly accommodated our laptops and shopping bags. Extras included free Wi-Fi, a stocked magazine rack and a retro-looking alarm clock that I coveted.
The Bathroom
The spacious walk-in shower had Bliss body wash and shampoo-conditioner in wall-mounted dispensers. I complained twice about the sliding door that slammed loudly into the sink every time I opened it, but no one ever came to take a look.
Dining
The only food available from the hotel is at a 24-hour snack store in the lobby. Room service is outsourced to Lago, a classic pizza-and-pasta Italian restaurant on the street level. It's one of three dining options on the hotel's ground floor; the others are Willeyville, which serves seasonal and locally sourced American dishes, and Ken Stewart's East Bank, an upscale steak and small-plates restaurant. A Saturday night meal at Willeyville included delicious vegetarian options for me (grilled sweet corn, baked gnocchi), plenty of meat for a friend and a mind-blowing fried peach pie. A Sunday morning breakfast with a gigantic serving of delicious granola and yogurt was delivered at the pre-arranged time.
Amenities
On a Friday night the w xyz bar, gleaming with splashes of pulsing blue, green and yellow lights, drew a young crowd. At an adjacent lounge, 20-something guests and locals played a board game and commandeered a pool table. The hotel has a small 24-hour gym and a laundry room.
Bottom Line
A terrific place for design geeks, foodies and fans of rust-belt chic who like their boutique hotel on the industrial side.
