36 Hours in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 19 Desember 2013 | 17.35

Ever since the first French fur trappers crossed into Jackson Hole from the area that is now Yellowstone National Park in the early 19th century, visitors have been flabbergasted by the majestic beauty of this flat plain fenced in by snow-clad peaks soaring a mile up from the valley floor, including the now iconic 13,770-foot Grand Teton. Jackson Hole and its slopes are more accessible than ever, with direct flights from Newark, Denver, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Minneapolis, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City, and a recent overhaul of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort's lift system. But there is also plenty on the valley floor to grab your attention, including vast wilderness reserves where deer and the buffalo roam. Add to that Jackson, an old-school cowboy town with lots of new panache, the bohemian log cabin village of Wilson and the luxurious modern facilities of Teton Village, and you've got a weekend where true-West sensibilities and wilderness adventures are balanced by comfort and style.

FRIDAY

4 p.m.
1. Local Wears

If you want to blend in, the local look is "cowpine," and that's what you'll find at Stio in Jackson, which blends elegance with modern insulating technology under its own brand. If you're leaning more toward the cowboy aesthetic, head to Bet the Ranch for vintage used cowboy boots, cowhide purses and other chic Western accessories. Around the corner local artisans created the eclectic wares of Made, whose owner, John Frechette, designed all those stylish glass belt buckles, including the ones modeled after the Wyoming Flag ($42). It also carries hammered silver jewelry, including hoop earrings ($36) by the local jeweler Sarah Tams, and bags of candied bacon ($15), a favorite local snack.

5 p.m.
2. Night Skiing

While the big ski resort 12 miles across the valley from Jackson closes at 4 p.m., the more intimate Snow King Mountain stays open until 7 p.m. thanks to lots of floodlights. Snow King is beloved by locals as it's just a 10-minute walk from the elk horn arches of Jackson Town Square, almost never has lift lines and charges a bargain $20 for night skiing. Exhibition ski run, with its steep, long, unbroken fall line, is where generations of Olympians cut their teeth while beginners and intermediate skiers hit their stride under the Rafferty lift.

6:30 p.m.
3. Sleigh Ride

At Spring Creek Ranch, which straddles East Gros Ventre Butte and is a 10-minute drive from Jackson, cowhands will pull thick blankets over you for a horse-pulled sleigh ride to the top of the butte 1,000 feet directly above town. After gaping at what must be one of the best views on the continent, sleigh back down to dinner at the Ranch's Granary Restaurant, a popular Friday night destination with live jazz. The chef, Shaun Kiechlin, has mastered Jackson Hole high-altitude cuisine with dishes like Cajun-spice elk tenderloin and rainbow trout with black truffles — all served at the edge of the butte with the stars twinkling above the Teton Range and moose, mule deer and elk grazing among the cabins outside. The dinner sleigh ride is $95 a person.

SATURDAY

9:15 a.m.
4. Mountain Breakfast

Join the morning ski patrol and eager skiers for waffles with brown sugar butter or with peanut butter and bacon ($6.50), in the cozy confines of the seemingly permanently ice-encrusted Corbet's Cabin 10,450 feet up Rendezvous Mountain. Situated next to the aerial tram, Corbet's offers delicious options to fuel a day on the slopes.

9:30 a.m.
5. Skiing the Tetons

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is unlike any other ski mountain. This side of the valley was created by tectonic tilting, resulting in slopes rising straight out of the prairie like an upended table. Add to that the valley's microclimate that produces considerable precipitation — this is powder country — and it's obvious why Jackson Hole has a cult following. That cult is easier to join with the newly installed Casper high-speed quad lift, which has opened up the vast intermediate and beginner slopes — as locals say, "If it's new, it's blue" (as in intermediate blue runs). For advanced skiers, Corbet's Couloir, Rendezvous Mountain and the unusually accessible backcountry skiing (they even have testing devices for your personal avalanche gear at the gates) remain legendary. Day passes are $101.

1 p.m.
6. Slopeside Ski Lunch
