The Lexington Hotel New York City recently completed a $46 million renovation of its public spaces, guest rooms and suites, part of which pays homage to the property's former residents, Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe.

The couple took up residence in the 18th-floor penthouse suite, now called the Centerfield, after marrying in 1954. The accommodation pays tribute to their brief union with bookshelves decorated with the baseball star's memorabilia and commissioned portraits of both on the walls.

The suite's foyer is reminiscent of traditional prewar Manhattan apartments, with black and white baseball diamond tile floors, cream walls and an over-sized painting of Yankee Stadium claiming center stage.

The suite also features a lounge-like living room, separate bedroom, two bathrooms, a full kitchen and a balcony with views of Midtown. Subtle decorating details, like baseball stitching on pillows and lampshades and historic photos of both Monroe and DiMaggio, are displayed throughout.

The hotel, built in 1929, became part of the Autograph Collection, Marriott's brand of upscale, independently operated properties, this summer. Other renovations to the hotel's two-story lobby and reception area recall some of its vintage glamour, and also include contemporary art work and furnishings.

The Mixing Room, a new Jazz Age-style bar and lounge features classic cocktails and a library; and guest rooms received contemporary enhancements with hints of the hotel's Art Deco origins worked into the decor.

Rooms with one queen bed start at $399; the Centerfield Suite starts at $1,500.
