Travelers who fancy themselves flyboys and girls can test their skills at Fly the Dream, a new virtual entertainment store where customers can navigate a simulated flight of an F-16 Falcon, a single-engine fighter aircraft developed by General Dynamics for the Air Force in the early 1970s.

The first store, which opened Tuesday in Los Angeles, features seven high-fidelity cockpit simulators, each replicating more than 100 functions of the F-16 through 12 touch-screen monitors, a 180-degree field of view with real-world perspective, integrated control panels and combat rudder pedals.

The entertainment company Go Exist created the simulators with the assistance of the Air Force.

Flight difficulty varies. Beginner "Earn Your Wings" missions are $89, and take just under an hour and a half to complete, with 20 minutes of training, 10 minutes for a briefing on the mission and to suit-up in flight gear, and 50 minutes of actual fly time. The more advanced "Spread Your Wings" mission, at $129, includes 15 minutes of training and preparation and 110 minutes of actual fly time.

Assistance is available during both missions. Reservations are required and can be made online at flythedream.com or at (323) 965-2222.
