In Transit Blog: In Uganda, a Chance to Work With Gorilla Researchers

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 11 Oktober 2013 | 17.35

In addition to staring in awe at a rare African species, safari-goers can give an assist to science by working with gorilla researchers. Uganda-based Premier Safaris has partnered with the renowned gorilla expert Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka to offer research-focused itineraries to see mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

In the new four-day tours, travelers spend time in the field tracking the gorillas with a researcher or, for an upgrade, Dr. Kalema-Zikusoka herself, learning about their habitat and behavior from scientists directly involved in monitoring them. Safari-goers will help collect dung for future lab analysis, and visit area communities, participating in conservation training.

A portion of the trip fees goes to Conservation Through Public Health, a nonprofit organization founded by Dr. Kalema-Zikusoka.

Rates start at $3,300 per person, double occupancy, and $4,500 per person in the company of Dr. Gladys, as she is known.
