Vayable.com, which is based in San Francisco and began in 2011 as an online tour company, is now taking a personalized approach to vacations with a new service in which locals plan and book curated trips for travelers.
There are more than 150 of these planners around the world in popular destinations like Paris and Buenos Aires as well as more obscure ones like the Japanese Alps or Papua New Guinea, and they have been vetted through an application and training process, said the company's founder, Jamie Wong.
Membership isn't required, and travelers can plan a trip by visiting the site and completing a questionnaire that covers their desired destination, budget, hobbies and whether they want a more active or laid-back getaway.
Once they submit their answers, the site locates an insider who works with travelers to plan every aspect of the trip, including hotels, walking tours, restaurant reservations, internal flights and train tickets.
Ms. Wong said that Vayable's selling point is the experiences it can offer travelers based on their interests, like ninja training in Kita, Japan, hanging out with a rapper in Rio's favelas or fishing with a Fijian king on a private island. She said that the service was a result of her own adventures on the road.
"I've traveled to 40 countries, and many of the trips have been through the back door in that they have been personalized or really authentic because of friends or friends of friends I knew on the ground," she said.
"I found that these kinds of vacations were so much more meaningful than the ones where I did the standard tours," she said.
There's no cost to plan the trips, but if travelers decide to go forward with booking they pay a fee set by each insider ranging anywhere from $20 to $500.
