In Transit Blog: A New Travel Site for Myanmar

Travel in Myanmar is changing so rapidly, even the country's own tourism Web site – which displays outdated entry fees to Bagan's temples — can't keep up, a lapse the new site Go-Myanmar.com aims to address.

Founded by 34-year-old London expat Marcus Allender, based in Yagon, the new travel site provides overviews of tourist-friendly areas of the country as well as transportation advice, suggested itineraries for independent travelers and useful travel tips on everything from visas to SIM cards. The site addresses both leisure and business travelers, and its listings of accommodations are comprehensive at more than 400 properties, although they lack reviews.

The site doesn't gloss over the difficulties of travel in Myanmar, including frequent blackouts, lack of infrastructure and unreliable Internet service.

"From inception, the idea was to create a comprehensive warts-and-all guide to the country. I don't want potential visitors to think things are easier to do here than they actually are," Mr. Allender wrote in an e-mail.

The site eventually aims to provide users links to online reservations. Mr. Allender added that "setting up an integrated hotel booking system is one of the next challenges–and it is huge one in a country like Myanmar, where electronic payment is nascent."
