In Transit Blog: Hidden Lives: Porters of Machu Picchu

How do you explore an entire continent? The best approach is piece by piece. For our Latin America issue (which we're publishing all week in the Travel section), we've tried to do that, focusing on the people and the culture that you discover when you're not distracted by the Big Attraction.

There is no better complement for our articles on this theme than "Porters," a video created by Fat Rat Films as part of its Hidden Lives series. Instead of just seeing Machu Picchu, the producer Fred Grace paid attention to the porters who cater to tourists traveling there.

Mr. Grace was among the thousands who each year hike nearly 30 miles over the course of four days to see the wonder. Of the trip, he wrote:

It's a difficult walk — at the highest point, you find yourself 4000 meters up and your breath is literally taken away.

But you don't do it alone, in fact you don't even carry your own gear. That job is done by an army of porters. While we struggled in our expensive hiking boots with our day-pack, they carried our tents, food and clothes. In threadbare sandals they took tables for us to eat on and chairs for us to sit on.

Each morning, after we had started our walk, they would pack everything up, load 25 kg of weight onto their backs and set off. About half way through our walk, you would hear a rumble behind you as they caught up and then passed us, often running to ensure they could make camp before we got there. As we eventually stumbled in, puffing and panting, they would gather together to applaud our arrival.
