Room service is a mainstay at most hotels, but not always the best option for travelers looking for an affordable and quick bite. For guests who would rather not spend the money or the time waiting for room service, hotels are offering more fast-food-style, budget-friendly dining choices (while still offering traditional meals delivered to rooms). The Amway Grand Plaza hotel in Grand Rapids, Mich., noticed its guests frequently ordering pizza from local restaurants and created its own competitively priced pizza delivery service, Piezalli's.
The newly opened Courtyard New Orleans Downtown/Iberville has a grab-and-go-style restaurant in its lobby with pastries, sandwiches, Starbucks beverages and alcohol.
And Affinia Hotels is incorporating grab-and-go features into the redesign of its boutique properties; the Affinia Gardens, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, for example, has the Cupboard, a contemporary take on the general store, offering a variety of items, including some from Dylan's Candy Bar. Later this year, Affinia 50 and Affinia Manhattan will offer similar spaces. The hotel group also has a daily free wine hour.
MileNorth, a hotel in Chicago, recently introduced a casual restaurant with an adjoining fast-food-style marketplace with locally sourced dishes like a sausage trio using meat from local farms. The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood, Fla., is one of several properties in the chain that have added restaurants called Ingredients — subtitled Some Assembly Required — in their lobbies, with ready-made breakfast items, sandwiches and salads.
