In Transit Blog: A New Trail at the Cliffs of Moher

Icons of Ireland's west, the Cliffs of Moher tower 702 feet above the churning Atlantic, and reign as the country's most visited natural attraction. Now the intrepid can get even closer to the precipice on a new 12-mile walking trail that skirts the cliffs, linking Doolin in the north and Liscannor in the south.

Opened in June, the new route in County Clare climbs and descends over steep grades with no barriers, handrails or cliff-front fences. Consequently tourism officials recommend the walk only to only experienced hikers and supervised children over age 12. The path is closed to bikes and dogs.

The coastal path crosses the rural holdings of more than 30 landowners, many of whom run B&Bs well situated for walkers, including Doonagore Farmhouse in Doolin owned by Pat Sweeney, who offers free guided walks along the cliffs to guests.

From Doolin, the five-mile walk to the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Center takes about two and a half to three hours, while the seven-and-a-half-mile continuation to Liscannor takes another three and a half hours.
