In Transit Blog: Lonely Planet’s Plans to Make Up for Job Cuts

After Lonely Planet announced last month that it was eliminating 70 to 80 positions in a staff of 450, eulogies by travelers who had used its guidebooks flooded Twitter with hashtags like #LPMemories.

As @JayneDarcy reminisced: "the moment I realised the man downing 3 shots of raki at 7am was our minibus driver for the nxt 2 hours thru Albanian alps #lpmemories."

But Lonely Planet's chief operating officer, Daniel Houghton, says there's no need to bid farewell to the 40-year-old brand. The job cuts are part of a broader restructuring, he said, meant to  integrate the "siloed" editorial departments responsible for its various publishing platforms, including books, e-books and mobile apps.

"We want our products to be complementary," he said, "and the best way to do that is with your staff."

At the same time, Mr. Houghton is making up for any loss in the sort of well-researched advice that readers have come to expect with additional video content and with user recommendations gathered through Lonely Planet's online forum and social-networking arm. Welcoming content from readers does not undermine its traditional content, Mr. Houghton said, adding that some tips don't require the same level of editorial vetting the guidebooks require. It's very different to recommend a place to have a drink in Melbourne," said Mr. Houghton, "than, say, where you can sleep in Africa."

This has been a year of transition for the Melbourne-based company. In March, BBC Worldwide, which bought  Lonely Planet for $196 million in 2007, sold it at a significant loss for $77.8 million to NC2 Media, a company controlled by the Kentucky businessman Brad M. Kelley.
