A new restaurant, set in a vineyard in northeastern Italy, serves a contemporary interpretation of Italian food.
Joe and Lidia Bastianich opened Orsone, a tavern, restaurant and bed-and-breakfast on Tuesday in Cividale del Friuli, Italy, about an hour and 15 minutes from Venice.
Orsone, which means "big bear" in Italian, marks the mother and son's first restaurant venture in Italy and in their family's ancestral home on the grounds of the Bastianich winery.
The Bastianiches are partners with Mario Batali in the Batali & Bastianich Hospitality Group, whose high-profile restaurants include Babbo and Del Posto. The group is also a partner in Eataly, the Italian food and wine marketplace in New York.
Orsone's intimate, eight-table restaurant dining room will feature regional Italian classics "but interpreted with our own sensibility," Mr. Bastianich said. The food, he said, will be "a celebration of 'Ital/New Yorkese' cuisine" — traditional Italian fare with American influences. (Several chefs previously worked at Del Posto in Manhattan's meatpacking district.)
The informal tavern, which includes 12 seats at the bar, will focus on American classics like apple pie, burgers and French fries, lobster roll and a dessert made with peanut butter and jelly. "Things that are a bit different for this part of Italy," he said.
The property also includes a small, one suite, six-room B&B.
"It's in the middle of the vineyard. It's like something you might see in California," Mr. Bastianich said. In addition to fine food and spirits (and sleeping them off afterward), guests can tour the grounds and take part in wine tastings.
"We'll even send a car to the Venice airport" for overnight guests, he said.
