In Transit Blog: Call It Rail and Sail

Leisure train trips often adopt the cruise ship model of sightseeing in transit, punctuated by excursions at stops en route. Now Rocky Mountaineer is expanding its combination of land and sea cruises by linking up with Norwegian Cruise Line.

Beginning next May (the month when Alaskan cruises resume annually) travelers can book rail trips through the Canadian Rockies, winding up in Seattle or Vancouver, where they will transfer to an NCL ship for an Inside Passage cruise.

Westbound trips start in Calgary and visit Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper by train and coach before arriving in Seattle or Vancouver for a weeklong cruise ending either back at the departure port or at Whittier, Alaska. Eastbound trips operate in reverse.

The five new trips run 14 to 17 days and start at $3,909, double occupancy. Rocky Mountaineer offers similar Alaska cruise packages with Holland America Line.
