In Transit Blog: Travel Warnings on Egypt

The rising tensions and violence in Egypt over the ouster of Mohamed Morsi, the country's deposed president, have compelled some tour operators to cancel their scheduled trips and foreign governments to advise their citizens against traveling to the country.

Even before the steep escalation of violence early Monday morning, with Egyptian soldiers and police officers firing on hundreds of supporters of Mr. Morsi and killing at least 51 civilian demonstrators, the United States State Department issued a travel warning last week advising American citizens to defer travel to Egypt and those American citizens living in Egypt to depart, citing the killing of a United States citizen at a demonstration in Alexandria on June 28 as cause for alarm. The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office also recommended against all but essential travel to Egypt.

Commercial airports are still operating in the country, and protests have been limited to major cities, including Cairo, Alexandria and Port Said. Though tourist sites like Luxor, Aswan and Red Sea resorts remain calm and open for business, a number of tour operators have suspended trips to the country altogether.

On July 1 the luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent began canceling its tours through September 2013, waiving cancellation penalties for its clients. It took similar measures in early 2011 in response to the antigovernment protests in Egypt that were part of Arab Spring movement that was sweeping the Middle East.

Egypt's tourism industry was just beginning to rebound from the losses it suffered in 2011 when the recent violence erupted. According to a 2013 report by the United Nations World Tourism Organization, the country's tourism industry brought in nearly $10 billion in 2012, up from $8.7 billion in 2011, though still not reaching the $12.5 billion it had recorded in 2010.
