Beset by contracting hiccups ranging from matching the original facade color to replumbing nine-foot-thick walls, the Four Seasons Hotel Lion Palace St. Petersburg, Russia, opened in the historic Admiralteysky district on July 7, about a year behind schedule.

The six-year construction project remodeled an 1820-vintage luxury apartment house, later adapted as a czarist defense ministry and a Communist city planning studio, into a 177-room hotel.

"One of the biggest concerns was the load," said  Martin Rhomberg, the general manager, noting that building had to be fortified before construction could begin. "Back then there was no pool on the fourth floor or marble bathrooms."

Modern additions like the pool and spa and two restaurants are still under construction, with one restaurant set to open Aug.15 and the other Sept. 1. Rooms currently start at $450, and at $330 in winter.

Restored historic details include vaulted ceilings, wood-paneled walls, a grand granite staircase and the original facade shade of yellow, determined after experts examined 40 coats of paint on the exterior.
