In Transit Blog: A Celebration of Cheese in North Carolina

The new Western North Carolina Cheese Trail plots out a road trip highlighting 10 artisanal and farmstead cheesemakers located across the scenic western wedge of the state.

While the guide doesn't yet rival the 44-stop Vermont Cheese Trail, it's a great start, said an organizer, Jennifer Perkins of Looking Glass Creamery in Fairview, Stop 5 along the trail. "People are surprised to learn that not only is North Carolina the leader in the South in terms of artisan cheesemakers, with about 50 statewide, 20 of them are in the mountains," she said.

Looking Glass makes a range of goat and cow cheese, from soft-ripened pasteurized varieties to aged raw-milk cheeses and fresh chèvre. Its goat milk is sourced from Round Mountain Creamery in Black Mountain, the No. 9 stop, where visitors can chat with the owner Linda Seligman, who tends to about 300 goats and makes her own line of chevre.

The westernmost farm, No. 10, is Yellow Branch Cheese and Pottery in Robbinsville, the state's longest-running farmstead cheesemaker, making table cheese from Jersey cows since 1986. Ms. Perkins expects the trail, which will be updated online, to grow, along with the state's reputation for quality handcrafted cheese.
