In Transit Blog: A Busy Summer at Fontainebleau After Renovations

As Paris expands under its annual crush of summer visitors, Fontainebleau's palace and forests make for a perfect day trip. After a year of renovations, the chateau is offering extensive summer programming and the unveiling of Napoleon III's private study.

Napoleon III's cabinet de travail completes the chateau's "Second Empire circuit," which also includes his and the Empress Eugenie's private chambers and the Chinese Museum, which holds pieces from across Asia.

After the empire fell, the study came to serve as a dining room for presidents of the French Republic. Its opening comes at the end of a 1.15  million-euro renovation sponsored by the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheik Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan — known for his support of the Louvre Abu Dhabi project — who is also helping to renovate the Theater of Napoleon III, scheduled for a spring 2014 opening.

The study, which opened on June 26, is an excellent example of late Second Empire decorative arts. Sumptuous chandeliers and armchairs complement Louis-Napoleon's streamlined writing desks and solid-color wallpapers.

Also new for this summer are guided nighttime tours every Thursday until Aug. 29 through the geometrically complex gardens, courtyards and grotto.

There are also organ recitals in the intimate Chapel of the Trinity on July 25, and concerts by American Conservatory students (whose ranks have included Leonard Bernstein) beginning Saturday. Or, to really get a sense of the hunting grounds that drew French royals here for centuries, visitors can rent  bikes  from A la Petite Reine (14, rue de la Paroisse, from 8 euros, or $10,  an hour) and escape to the forests or village of Barbizon, known for its long association with artists.

The chateau is accessible from Paris by way of hourly trains departing from the Gare de Lyon to Fontainebleau-Avon, or ParisVision shuttles running from 214, rue de Rivoli. Entry to Napoleon III's study is included with ticket purchases for a guided tour, and ticketing for musical events varies and is updated on the chateau's website.
