Letters: Letters to the Editor

To the Editor: Regarding "There Isn't an Off-Season for Your Skis" (Dec. 9), I was surprised there was no mention of Tuckerman Ravine, a glacial cirque in New Hampshire. It truly is the place for skiers who eschew lifts of any kind. The head wall is the test for all who seek skiing at its most vertiginous. Memorial Day is a rite of passage for those hiking up from Pinkham Notch to reach the HoJo's, the caretaker's cabin, and then up to the peak for a choice of gullies. Not for the faint of heart.

To the Editor: I'm from mid-Vermont, so I should have some loyalty, but Killington? Really? In November no less? If you're lucky, November at Killington will get you 10 mediocre trails on thin, artificial snow. I don't care how great or sophisticated their snow-making is, they are not even in the same league as any of the other major mountains mentioned in this piece. I would argue that the only Vermont ski mountain perhaps worthy of this list would be Jay Peak because of its natural snowfall and terrain.

To the Editor: Instead of Las LeƱas, go farther south in the Argentine Andes to San Carlos de Bariloche for a more civilized ski experience. The gorgeous views from the top of the gondola to the forested shores of Lago Nahuel Huapi are a dead ringer for Lake Tahoe, and the casinos of Bariloche take over the nighttime duties.
