Virginia's Northern Neck

To the Editor: Regarding "Virginia's Lost History" (Nov. 25), I think a reason Virginia isn't visited as often as it merits (it is one of the most beautiful and historic states on the Eastern Seaboard), and the Northern Neck in particular, is evident in many of the comments on the Travel Web site: the abiding haze of slavery surrounds so many of the historic areas and sites. Although New England and the mid-Atlantic states have their share of ties to slavery, most visitors don't associate these areas with that shameful institution. It's easier on one's sense of morality to go see the leaves turn in the Berkshires than it is to visit Monticello or Stratford Hall.

Preserving a Jewish Heritage

To the Editor: Regarding "In Tuscany, a Jewish Heritage" (Nov. 25), It is touching to read that while only a handful of Jews remain living in this small town today, Elena Servi has dedicated her life to preserving its long Jewish history. It should be noted that Edda Servi Machlin, who was born in Pitigliano but emigrated to the United States (apparently no relation to Elena Servi), has written several cookbooks in English about Italian-Jewish cuisine, which include memoirs about Jewish life in the town. While currently out of print, they are available for sale used and at libraries. Reading and cooking these recipes offer the possibility for an ancient culture to continue through its food traditions.
