In Transit Blog: Forget In-Flight Movies; Preflight Is the Way to Go

Southwest Airlines is planning on sending its customers personalized videos before their flight with details on the departure and boarding time and gate, and arrival time and gate, as well as information on mileage-boosting offers and upgrade costs for the route.

Based on the demo, the video — to be sent by e-mail or text message and also to be available on the airlines' Web site — will be a colorful animated short depicting scenes including a plane's flight path and your baggage screening, presented over sunny music. It was created in conjunction with SundaySky, a firm that specializes in custom videos and ads for large corporations.

That should be no surprise. Though seeing your name flash across the screen and finding out the specific number of miles you can get if you add on a rental car can be valuable, the effort is part welcome travel information and part very targeted commercial. Where it lies on the spectrum probably depends on how invested in your mileage bank you are.
