A reluctant gay cruiser finds the right mix of culture and camaraderie — and still gets to sleep by midnight. More…

The first gay-themed film that I remember thoroughly enjoying was "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert." It was funny, had a great soundtrack and the characters all seemed confident in their identities. Before that, my experience with gay cinema was a mix of self-loathing screeds ("The Boys in the Band"), cautionary tales ("Longtime Companion") and blink-and-you'll-miss it crumbs ("Pump Up the Volume").

The films, documentaries and Web shorts that were presented as part of the Pride of the Ocean film festival aboard the Celebrity Summit had a richness and diversity of subject matter that was a welcome surprise. The group was able to see full-length features, Web series or previews of projects still seeking financing. Here are some of the highlights from the festival:

"Vito" is a documentary about the film scholar and activist Vito Russo. You can read The Times review, from when it was broadcast on HBO, here.

The country singer Chely Wright's struggle to come out is chronicled in ''Wish Me Away." It covers how she told her family, the reaction of fans and the music industry, and the media attention, including a couch session with Oprah Winfrey. See the trailer for the film here.

"Back on Board," a documentary about the Olympic diver Greg Louganis, is a work in progress. A 14-minute trailer was shown and the filmmakers, Cheryl Furjanic and Will Sweeney, had a successful Kickstarter campaign that helped raise $50,000 to finish shooting.

"Steam Room Stories," one of the three Web series that were screened, is written and directed by JC Calciano. It consists of four-minute skits set in, no surprise, a steam room. The men are shirtless and wrapped in towels, but I'm still hesitant to call the videos work-safe. (I felt sheepish calling up the site at the office while writing this.) The ones I've seen are funny, but I was more fascinated that Calciano actually makes a modest income (about $12,000 annually) from the advertising revenue they generate on their YouTube channel.

"Hustling" is about a gigolo going through a midlife crisis. He's tired of turning tricks and seems on the verge of finding his next passion: cooking. Sebastian La Cause is the force of nature behind the show: actor, writer, director and producer. Season 1 was eight episodes, and a Kickstarter campaign in June raised financing for Season 2.

The director Stu Maddux does a tremendous job with ''Gen Silent," about the difficulties faced by older members of the L.G.B.T. community. The health issues of the elderly are compounded when the care providers are not used to, or uncomfortable with, helping gay, lesbian or transgender patients.

The documentary series "50Faggots" is about how "effeminate gay men survive and thrive in today's American queer communities." The creator and director, Randall Jenson, is chronicling the lives of 10 men and the result is like being a fly on the wall of their lives. The word "faggot" in the title gave me pause, and I asked Jenson about it. "That's always the million dollar question," he wrote in an e-mail. He said all the participants in the series, including himself, had been called it, and that it is also a word used by gay men themselves. "I want to talk about the ways gay men do and don't support each other and what makes us a community," he noted. You can see trailers, and Episode 1, here.
